12-21-2016: I am writing a book about the USS Plunkett (DD-431) that was hit at Anzio on Jan. 24, 1944 with a 550-lb. bomb that killed 53 men. My book follows four men from their hometowns in Illinois, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. One of the men was Capt. Eddie Burke, who died in 1966. Two of the men are still living. And one of the men died on a 20mm gun at Anzio. I am hoping to connect with and interview a man who was on a 20mm gun on a destroyer, in the Atlantic or Pacific, and who can talk to me about what it was like to be at GQ under assault by enemy aircraft. His son Wendall Jr., 910-324-6132, would like to hear from people who knew his dad. Wendall tried to reenlist in the Navy, but flunked the physical because of his hearing So he enlisted in the Air Force and retired from there in 1965.
